Longest war in history - an explanation

In 1651, the Dutch Estates General declared war upon the pirates living on the Isles of Scilly. Admiral Maarten Tromp (this is a nice stone tablet from Amsterdam) was sent out with a substantial navy. Before it arrived, however, the English navy intervened, and admiral Robert Blake promised to solve the problem.

However, next year, the First Anglo-Dutch War broke out, which lasted until 1654. When the Peace of Westminster was signed, it was forgotten that the Dutch Republic was still at war with the Isles of Scilly. This was discovered in 1985; on 17 April 1986, the Peace of London was concluded between the Kingdom of the Netherlands (successor of the Republic) and the United Kingdom (in which the Isles of Scilly are now included).

Thus ended the longest war in history. During 335 years, not a single shot has been fired.

Techinically the Silly War has been fought here in America since about 1965 all over the US

Gotta agree. I wonder if the Cold War of the 50s-80s fits that category?

Nope. It was regulary fought by proxy in 3rd world countries who were suported by Western or Eastern troops occasionaly (i.e. Africa ).

In most developed areas depends on ones view if policaly motivated violence was or is war.

No shots fired, and people share a [beer] - sounds like the best kind of war.

That or a "reenactment" war - noone gets hurt or killed and we all have a good time.

I've seen Vietnam war reenactors/living historians, and have even seen some people with Gulf War (1991) gear at some Timeline events.

I'm sure there's a reenactor for just about every period in 'recorded' history by now....Some of us are getting close to covering every period known :roll:

A war both sides forget they were fighting--my kind of war.

But that raises the question, how do we reenact battles that didn't happen? Think of the rousing reenactments of the famous low tide invasion of the Scillys, followed by the high tide retreat which will never see the light of day...not to mention dry land?
