Lighting oil lamps
#1
Just to prove they're not all about Batavii (sorry boys), what we came up with at the pub last night:

Q: How many slaves does it take to light an oil lamp?

A: Ummm... dunno, never noticed.

Q: How many praetorians does it take to light an oil lamp?

A: One hundred. One to light the lamp, one to kill the Emperor, and ninety-eight to find a new Emperor.

Q: How many slaves does it take to light an oil lamp in 200 AD?

A: Just one. But in the great days of the Republic, a thousand slaves would have lit a thousand lamps at our merest whim!!

Q: How many barbarii does it take to light an oil lamp?

A: One, as long as you can wait all day for him to rub the sticks together.

Q: How many barabarii does it take to light an oil lamp?

A: None. We're expecting a bit much for barbarians to use modern technology, aren't we?

Q: How many Batavii does it take to light an oil lamp?

A: Two. One to light the lamp, and the other to make up ridiculous stories about swimming across rivers in armour.

Q. How many reenactors does it take to light an oil lamp?

A. Is it glazed or unglazed? Is that based on an original? Do you have the reference for that? Can anybody recommend someone who makes good wicks? Do I have to use olive oil, or will canola oil work?

Q: How many Late Romans does it take to light an oil lamp?

A: They all forgot how, because the lighting instructions had become too difficult during the Flavian period.

A: Grunt..., I've not time to waste for lighting oil lamps, but, baby, I'll do it if you like to admire all my glory...

HAHAH! Nice!

Dan - I think you hit it right on the head with us Reenactors. But you forgot one - What color is it supposed to be?

Titus - "lighting my oil lamp" - I think you just created a new euphamism, someone get a hold of Jim Morrison.

How many Tirones does it take to light an oil lamp?

Dunno, the wax tablets with the instructions keep melting from the torches.
