Thanks Andreas!

IIRC the Parisi were Belgic, who were said to consider themselves to have a German heritage so may have had DNA similar to later Anglo saxon and Danish Vikings.

The Cimbri, who are said to have eminated from Jutland and no boubt thier wanderings spread a little more DNA from that region amoungst the Gauls & Spanish !

Hi Conal,

That all depends on to what degree the Belgae were genetically similar – at the Y chromosome level – to the “Germanicâ€

To give an idea of the bunch of bollocks that is occasionally being sold as historical genetics, take Brian Sykes “Saxons, Vikings and Celtsâ€

A little addition to this thread. I recently stumbled upon several new articles about research looking at thousands of bits of DNA all over the genome of individuals, rather than just the Y chromosomes or mitochondria. I still have to read them properly, but a quick perusal produced some interesting new bits of information.

This method has several advantages, as it measures overall genetic kinship between individuals, rather than just direct patrilineal and matrilineal descent (after all, the overwhelming majority of an individual’s ancestors were not the ones giving him or her Y chromosomes or mitochondria). This is especially interesting considering the suspicions that Y chromosome divisions across Europe may have been, for a large part, determined by very old Mesolithic and Neolithic settlement patterns, while a lot of later genetic inflow may have “died outâ€
