Ave All,
I hope everyone is doing well!
I have a question about the methods of wrapping the Pilum. I am still a new guy, so I am full of questions . I want to wrap my Pilum shaft but am unsure of the proper way to do it. Could someone explain? Does anyone have a close up picture of their Pilum wrapping? This would be for a 1st Cen. Pilum. Thank you very much

I think he is refering to the string that is wound around the shaft to form a hand grip area. Our group do it!
Not too sure how they do them, but I would just tie a roling hitch, and then continue hitching untill satisfied with the grip area. That is what I did with my scutum grip, and would do the same if I was doing a pilum.
We do it on sledge hammer shafts offshore, and it helps a bit in slippery conditions. Better than a slick wooden shaft anyway.

Just your common 'string', such as used for wrapping parcels, tying things in the garden etc! not sure what its made of , but no synthetics....(goes without saying) Usually comes in a wound ball, but not having lived in the states for over 20 years, or Canada for 17, not sure what it comes in back there, but would imagine it would be the same!

Yep. You can get it in jute, hemp, sisal or cotton in most any craft store.

Hmmmmmm, does look like you used some hefty string there Brian
hock: Perhaps some of the thinner variety, like no more than 3mm. That would suffice IMHO. I would post a picture but am away shortly, so can't get any pics online for you.

Nicely done. As said before, the rope could be thinner. What kind of pilum it is/did you make him yourself/where did you buy it?
