I think the article is a fake, too Themistoklis.
I was wondering about P. Connolly's picture showing Alexander and the Hetairoi. One of them got an iron muscle cuirass.
Does anyone know any evidence for an iron muscle cuirass in 4 b.c.?
It's concaivanle in my opinion but never seen archaeologival finds.
What do you guys think?

Yes, I know and saw the Vergina cuirass and helmet, they are iron. I mean does anyone know other iron cuirass findings apart from that.

Sadly, I have seen/heard of others handling finds without gloves! Experts said it was ok, but it makes me cringe! :?

to be honest they are not the only ones not taking care of things. Scraping Penteli marbles to get rid of the reddish color anyone?
Plus i remember when i was kid and went in my grandfathers village in Olympia a man found a Corinthian helmet in his field and wore it while being on the tracter for fun till he gave it away to the archaeologists 8)
not to mention the destruction of Mycenean mummy, Omphalos of Delphi and many more.
To be honest if i had found a helmet in such good shape i wouldnt resist to wear it for a photo Big Grin

There are some 4th C. BC South Italian terracotta cavalryman figures which still have most of the paint preserved on them, and a couple of them wear iron cuirasses.

This is late 3rd/2nd C. BC Pergamene, IIRC.

He had with him the selfsame rifle you see with him now, all mounted in german silver and the name that he\'d give it set with silver wire under the checkpiece in latin: Et In Arcadia Ego. Common enough for a man to name his gun. His is the first and only ever I seen with an inscription from the classics. - Cormac McCarthy, Blood Meridian

Thanks Ruben. So it may be possible that a makedonian soldier could have worn an iron cuirass in this time?!

The common soldier? I very much doubt it. Some well-off soldiers, able to afford extensive metal armour, might have used iron plate body armour, although it seems to have been scarce. The only style that I am sure existed at the time is the Vergina cuirass. Iron scale/lamellar was more common.

MeinPanzer, could I have the citation for those terracotta figures please? I haven't heard of them, and want to judge for myself. What did they look like?

I don't have a citation, unfortunately, as I found the images of them in a thread about Thracian helmets on a Russian forum linked to from a thread here on RAT some time ago. I'll post them later. The riders wear "flared" muscled cuirasses, and one wears an iron cuirass (I thought there were two, but on second inspection just one). The others wear identical cuirasses but of bronze instead, while some of them wear iron helmets. The iron is painted dark grey, and the bronze yellowish brown.

Does anyone know if this Cuirass from Corfu, is made of Iron or Bronze?

It was posted along with black & white pic from diferent angle else where, in iron helmet & cuirass thread.(PS: Didnt' explain it).

The cuirass definitely looks iron, and also seems to be of the "flared" type. The helmet is 3rd C. BC (from P. Dintsis, Hellenistische Helme). Were the helmet and cuirass related?

I would agree with the iron verdict on that. I am going to have to go to Corfu now. That is where my grandma was born. Now I have more than sentimental reason to go.......

Also that is a great helmet, I havn't seen a picture of it before. Good find Gioi!

Thanks, MeinPanzer. I was going to suggest that the statuettes' armour might have been painted bronze before I saw the museum photo above. There is evidence for bronze armour painted a variety of colours. Still, that cuirass in the other photo does look like iron, so it looks like iron plate cuirasses were sometimes used in Classical times.
