Crest for a Gallic A
#1
Is there any evidence out there on how to attach a helmet crest to a Gallic A? Would it attach right up against the helmet or suspended above the helmet like the Gallic G and H?

Thanks!

Of the five known Gallic A types, (three from Nijmegen one from Worms and the other from the Axel Guttmann collection) only one has any type of fitment for a crest.

It is the Worms helmet which features a button type attachment/decoration very similar in appearance to one of the Xanten Coolus helmets..

It looks to me like the helmet may have belonged to a Centurion at some point too.

Look at the brow guard. There has been two holes made through it. These would be an ideal place to secure a tranverse crestbox.

I would agree. The holes in the brow guard and above the ear holes make me think that the helmet was specialily modified to hold the crest.

That's a particularly interesting helmet. Originally it had no ear cutouts, and the neckguard came a little farther forward. At some point it was modified, with the neckguard cut back, the cheekpieces moved forwards, and the holes cut for the ears. You can also see rivet holes for earguards. Note that the nice roped edge was lost along the front edges of the neckguard, but some chisel marks added to try to mimic it. The ear cutouts were a hack job, too, kind of small and pointed.

I don't remember seeing those holes in the brow reinforce! FASCinating! Yeah, they look like they could be for crest attachment.

It's all tinned brass, by the way. Neat helmet! Manning Imperial has produced 2 gorgeous repros of it, one as it was first built and the other with all the modifications.

I looked at this type ages ago, just didn't remeber seeing the crest holder on it, Jim. (Yes, I should look at the data base more often)
Looks like the brow guard has slipped down, the hole on the right being ripped? or is that an optical? Can see what look like marks where it once sat a little higher up on the front.

Have to admit the Manning version is better crafted than the original! 8)

Here's another Gallic A from Nijmegen with a very interesting feature, the browguard having copper/brass wire inlaid into the edge.
