Making a Roman Attic Helmet from a Corinthian helm
#46
Anthony,

I gotta ask about this image...

I get it up to step two, and then I look at step three. Hmmm.

This is a lot like this cartoon...

A lot of the subtlety is lost in this abbreviated record. Can you walk us through this? It really is excellent.

Ave Travis,

I'm heading out for vacation (I'll be in New Hampshire all next week) but, below are some larger examples. I'm sorry that I didn't take many more step by step photos but.. I'll explain a bit and try to take more photos of my embossing work next time.

After tracing out the image, I added larger semi circles at the top of the wing. I drew a line in-between the longer lower feathers and then I drew in a second line left and a second line right.

Here I drew in all the long lines on both lower wings and I added semi circles on the chest. I also put semi circles on the left wing. On the right wing you can see split each semi circle down the middle and then I added more lines off that center line to look like wings.

This might look a bit overwhelming but… here you are seeing the finished eagle however; it’s really nothing more than more and more lines being added in-between each semi circle (at the top of the wings and the chest) and each long line (at the bottom of the wings).

I promise, next embossing I do … I will take far more step by step photos!

I’m planning on etching a shield boss soon too… after I finish my subarmails and my Hellenistic boots!
(will it EVER end?!?!?!) LOL
