Pilum Grip
#1
About 2 years ago, inspired by an inspiration, we tried tossing a pilum in the manner pictured below. The "Hispana Grip", as one of our guys named it, makes it possible for most guys within a shorter amount of training to toss a pilum farther and more accurately than the typical shaft grip.

Check it out. Give it a try.

Works real good with a lead weight! .. or with an Oberaden "hump"!

Nice!

That's very similar to the grip I've been experiementing with; my version has the thumb and forefinger wrapped around the back edge of the triangular block, and as I chuck, I pull with the finger and spin the shaft, sort of like a football.

I'll have to try out your new version too.

That is much as I was thinking of for the pilum, weighted too! Big Grin
Haven't realy tried it out tho' as the natives here get pretty uptight about 'spear-chuckers' running about the streets!

G Antonius Retiarius is using a standing throw.

When we train new guys we start with a standing throw... scutum held firmly in front... never rotated off of front.. after a few warnings and some additional instruction a probatus who continues to rotate his scutum off of front must "kiss the umbo" .. push-ups while straddling his scutum...

If you want to impress the public a massed volley in ranks is far easier with a standing throw. A volley by ranks is also cool!

We do a running throw later in training. We used to do a running throw in depth but many of those guys were qualified to do that were transfered to other modern duties.

Slave,

Now that seems like a logical way to throw the Pilum.

Since I don't know this one... does anyone know how Olympians are trained to throw a javelin? Is it a similar fashion or standard grip?

Salve!

This grip would explain the pilum design (the square block as a surface on which to apply forward pressure) as well. Unlike a round javelin, where the "thumb-side" of the hand faces backwards with the javelin gripped between thumb, for- and middlefinger with the javalin resting in the palm, this would add leverage, as in a baseball toss. Looks very natural!

Dang... I HAVE to get those pillum shafts turned!!!!

Tried in vain to find post hole digger handles locally. I have forged the warheads, just need the wood. Messed around with a few dimensional variations I have gathered over time to test which ones perform the best. They are forged not stock removal, and the tips are carbon packed to assist with punching through power.

What do you think lads, they look OK?

I can't wait to try this throwing in this manner/style as well.

Looks good Phillip. Try carving your pilum wood from a 2X2 of some type. I made mine from ash...took about 3-5 hours (I can't remember), or an evening's worth of work using a draw knife, some hand plainers, a wood rasp and some sand paper. With some practice it would take less time I'm sure.

Just a question for curiousity's sake...but was there something not working with the regular grip? Cuz i don't see how it can be more accurate?
