I was wondering if any other Greek city-states practiced a similar military culture as did the Spartans. Did some other cities rear their children from a young age to be soldiers? If my life depended on it, my first guess would be Milos and/or Gortyn but I really have no idea. Thank you in advance.

The Cretans strated a similar system from the Archaic to the Hellenistic Period. Plutarch says that Lycourgos used this system as a model
We simply do not know which Cretan city state tried it first.
We only know it was imposed by the doreans who conquered the island roughly 1000 B.C.
Childre stayed with family till 15 and were called apageloi.
From 15 to 18 they lived like the Spartans. In the 19th year they had to live in the wilderness for the whole year and after that they joined the army and became citizens.
Kind regards

Thank you so much hoplite14gr! If I'm not mistaken, Lycurgus got his ideas from Gortyn. Perhaps that's the mystery city-state. But that still doesn't answer which city had it first. Either way you've answered my question.
