Sherlock Holmes.
Someone saw Vidoq and thought: hey, I wanna somethin' like that on Sherlock...
2 minutes of deduction, half the movie fighting. And most of the deductive powers are used to find how to leave the opponents KO...Without the dark side that Vidoq had, it's not credible.
If you forget that the name of the movie and the names of the characters, it's a fine action / pursuit movie (don't expect more) nicely set in the late 1800's.

This is an old Sherlock Holmes film with Christopher Plummer as Holmes and James Mason as Watson tracking down Jack The Ripper -- or is it...
I rather liked the Plummer & Mason duo and their take on the characters. The director is the same one who did the better known A Christmas Story. The film feels very much like a Made-for-TV Movie, but then many of the films from the late 70's feel and look like that.
This film was remade as From Hell with Johnny Depp and Robbie Coltrane. As might be expected the blood level has been increased but it too is an entertaining film. Jack the Ripper has been a good villain for several films including the HG Wells take off Time After Time.

Quite right Tarbicus, and as I remember it Moore was none too happy with the adaptation.
Even so, it seems clear that Moore was influenced by the earlier film. Or, perhaps they are all mining he same material from Jack The Ripper and both films along with the graphic novel hit upon the same points. Indeed, the book if far richer, denser, layered than either film.

The latest Sherlock Holmes movie. I enjoyed it. They did a good job of showing Holmes' eccentricities, and Doyle's Holmes was physically powerful and skilled with revolver, sword, cane, or bare fists. So a Holmesian adventure with lots of fights and chases isn't completely out of character ...

My most recent is "Azumi". Adapted from Japanese manga it is a little over the top but the acting is pretty good. The choreography could be better but cinematography was excellent and the plot was well written. This is live action by the way and is a period piece.Have Fun watching it if you're interested.

Two non-military/history films over the weekend. I watched Vanilla Extract because my wife had rented it. I found Sunshine Cleaners on late night cable on my own so I can't use her as an excuse for watching a "chick-flick". I don't recall hearing any prior buzz on either of them, but both were great. Interesting characters well cast and acted. Writing and directing that tell stories, make sense and keep you interested, without blood, violence, or special effects. Best of all, they are free of obnoxious over-exposed hollywood elitists. Vanilla Extract is a lighter comedy and things are a bit campier but both are well worth a look.

The Book of Eli. I was enthralled. Great story, and as usual, Denzel did a superlative job. I won't talk the plot, because pretty much anything said would be a spoiler. But I'd pay a ticket price to see it again, and that says something.... :!:

On Cable: The Bedford Incident.
Remarkably good film -- very much in the vein of Fail-Safe or Seven Days In May.
I had heard of this film but never seen it until it was on TCM late Wednesday night. I kept thinking I should turn this off and go to bed, but I just wanted to see what happens next... and next ... and next ...
It is available on DVD and worth the rental of purchase.

Very interesting -- I did not know that.
I have read a couple of Coyle's books, but not that one.
As a matter of fact ...
We were both attending VMI at the same time -- I was a Rat and he was a First Class Cadet.
Our paths probably crossed more than once, (he was a 1st Class Pvt. in D Co and I was in E Co. 1st Class Pvt's are a breed unto their own) but I spent most of my free time swimming laps at the pool in an attempt to avoid the upper class cadets. Being on the varsity swimming team provided me with some "protection" from the petty indignities that many of them seemed to enjoy inflicting on the Rats.
I would guess the Coyle is the most famous member of the Class of '74
It was, to say the least, an "interesting" year.
