I was reading, a while back as a latin student, something about caracalla having troops who wore linothorax. Is this evidenced in the roman military in any form before this time? maybe among eastern auxiliaries?

Caracalla wanted to imitated Alexander the Great and is said to have equipped a legion as a Macedonian Phalanx (prolly in Dio and Herodian). It's therefore clearly a break with the past, if true.
