I have no paticular axe to grind (except rivers! ) but I DO believe (as said on page one I thnk) that Paulinus withdrew over ground he had already been over. In doing so he had had the opportunity to recce the ground and know where his strengths lay. As the enemy were advancing towards him he knew he could withdraw and bring them to battle on ground of his choosing.
Question is, as always, which piece of ground?
