My wife Helen used a simple wrap-over fly design on my femenalia, which I use as underwear with tunic or anaxyrides (they're so tight, I have had a few 'costume malfunctions' while rolling around).

She made them very large for me, cut a slit in the front & hemmed it - they make a fly as one tie is only attached well over to one side, creating an overlap when tied. As they are so large, I too can wear them high above my main belt, which keeps them up despite them having little stretch and me having such slim hips  The anaxyrides roll down while the femenalia open, giving security with convenience and I can recommend the system. As many of you may know, it is traditional for Scots to go "regimental" when wearing a kilt, i.e., nothing underneath. Well, a friend of mine in the local St. Andrew's Society used to complain bitterly about the cold in the winter, so his girl friend cut up a ratty old mink coat that heer mother was ready to toss and made a fur lined jockstrap for him. he toook me into the Men's Room to show it off one evening after describing it to my wife and me. My wife was irritated that he wouldn't show it to her!

Ade,
I hope the horses were not harmed or too emotionally scarred with the "bomb bay doors* open on your one member. Smile

Hmm, does anyone have a pattern to make a basic pair of drawstring braccae? I plan to make some out of linen, and/or possibly soft wool, with an added wooden toggle or button closure.

I have an *idea* of how it might be constructed, but need the advice of more seasoned makers. Smile

You can use the basic pattern to make your trousers long or short, drawstring or belt loops, loose or tight as needed. Add a fly if you like. I have found it handy to make the waistline angle upwards so that the back is higher than the front--this gives extra fabric in the seat, so that you can bend or sit easily without the legs pulling up.

Fast responses!

Thanks for the link Matthew - your page was very informative! And now I even know why they're also called "femenalia" (that makes sense as the thigh bone is femur). Thanks again. Smile

I'm going to buy some linen in the next three weeks when I have some moolah, then try making a pair. Will take some pics during construction too.

Gads, I never realized how easy we Migration Age and Late Roman Empire folks have it until I read this thread.

BTW, Colleen McCullough stated in her "First Man in Rome" series that she did not believe that Patrician Roman ethics would have allowed for a togate man to have slaves to help him relieve himself. I always thought that to be a bit specious.

Here's two choices that will work for you...assuming you can sew, of course. Evidently, the consensus opinion is that braccae and feminalia did not have outseams. So---

1. Get a fabric store pattern for medical scrub pants. Lay the front and back piece together, and make a single piece from the two of them. You'll have to adjust a couple of lines. Make sure you don't omit the angle change at the waist of the back piece. Check the waist and hip measurements against the person wearing them. Make them a little loose, so you'll have freedom of movement.

or 2. If the idea of altering an existing pattern makes you nervous, then order this one. I've tried it and it works just fine. Lots of different sizes in the same pkg.

It's pattern number MP-395 at fabric.com if the link doesn't work. BTW these guys have both linen and wool in various weights and colors.

Nope ... as far as I know it doesn't violate any rules an such.

Thank you for the link! Now I know where to go if the local fabric store doesn't have what I need. Though, I had no idea linen was so expensive!
