Funny the image Jay posted has been used on here for years, and hardly anyone person has questioned it
until recently.

Paul, I have a European pelt.
I'll let you see it when we meet at training!

I just acquired an old American black bear rug which is about 40 years old. I'm in the process of modifying the head and lower jaw to fit on a helmet. It's in good shape but after removing the old felt underside some areas of the leather are a bit dry. How do you treat the leather side of the pelt? I've searched all over the net and all I have found is that if it is starting to dry out it can be conditioned with oil, but I can't find which oil to use or even if I should use oil. How does everyone care for their pelts? Suggestions please...Thanks!

Really? Because the leather place told me Neatsfoot oil may not be good because the fur is still attached to the leather...But they weren't sure.

I was told by a taxidermist never to use neatsfoot oil on a hide. I could very well cause the hairs to fall out.
Best regards,

Now, if I had realised you were going to 'no-show' at training, I would have remembered and shown it to you at TORM!!
