Celtic helmet discovered in Bulgaria; lots of pictures
#1
Hi, a virtually unique Celtic helmet has been discovered in Bulgaria. I asked why they thought it was 2nd c. BC and not an AD Bulgar helmet. There are some convincing pictures of it and other "East Celt" helmets at [url:38gqe1bi]http://forum.xlegio.ru/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=6719&DisplayType=nested&setCookie=1

Cheers,

Chris

Sorry, I clicked on the link above and it is correct, it takes me direct to the pictures - possibly you have to login to the site, but I didn't login this time. I have logged in before, using a friend's login; maybe it remembers that. There are 16 large clear helmet photos plus photos of the Pergamum reliefs. I'm no expert on things Celtic, but I've only seen one of them before, it's been a real eye-opener for me. There are more pictures here:

Seems like there is indeed a link between membership and download abilities on that forum (something we can do too). If anyone needs a detail of the Pergamon reliefs, that can be arranged.

Can you capture the images and put them up here?

It all sounds quite intriguing.....

I'm not sure if the forum rules would allow me to post so many pictures, is there somewhere else I could put them?

I have received some other links for this guy which you should not have any problem with - this is Thracian arms and armour though

Incredible stuff, Chris ! A 'laude' from me for opening up this stuff....I see that Laran and Igor Dzis, both well-known here, are members of that forum!
Alas I cannot read cyrillic nor do I speak Bulgarian, but even just seeing the pictures is very worthwhile....and those guys are thorough ! Just about every Thracian helmet depiction I know of is on that thread.....and a lot more I hadn't seen before ! Confusedhock:

Still curious to see this 'unique' celtic helmet though - even one or two photos of it would suffice.... Smile

The helmet is unique mainly because there are none other of its type known in Bulgaria - you can see several photos of it at [url:2nrtao53]http://ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/thracians/photos/browse/10b3

Any idea about this? Is it from Bulgaria?

He had with him the selfsame rifle you see with him now, all mounted in german silver and the name that he\'d give it set with silver wire under the checkpiece in latin: Et In Arcadia Ego. Common enough for a man to name his gun. His is the first and only ever I seen with an inscription from the classics. - Cormac McCarthy, Blood Meridian

Cheers,

This kind of eastern Celtic helmet, though, is (as shown in that thread, though the one shown there are only a few) not uncommon anywhere where the Celts moved into the east, and it's to be expected that such a helmet would be found in Bulgaria. Any idea if it was found near Tylis?

I'd imagine that it's just a particularly southern example of a "Padea–Panaghiurski Kolonii" burial, then.

Hi, Stanimir saw this thread on RAT and has sent the pictures of the mail. I've put them on a new thread ("New helllenistic (?) mail") in the Roman archaeology section . Unfortuantely one of the pictures is too big, it'll be a little while before I can cut it down to size.

Also, he created a new topic about chain armour in http://forum.boinaslava.net/showthread. ... post205151 The third picture in his fisrt post there is the remains, according to him, of what Kitov claims to be a chain armour from the Sveticata mounds. Stanimir does not agree on this.
