Do you have some titles, because this is interesting.
With Central Europe, do you mean here what is now known as Eastern Europe/Balkans.

but the Ulfrun group is Viking, aren't they? I checked out their site.

I also like the lamellar and quilted arming coat(?) in the first picture.
Could a jacket like that be diamond pattern quilt as well ?

Quote:Hi There,

I have seen fragments of this type of construction of the 'spangen' parts of the helmet from excavation reports of Caucasus / Eastern European context.. of Avaric origins - The construction of the 'parts' (overlapping strips which support the panels) are consistent with others I have seen from Avaric sources... which would put them slightly earlier than the Carolingians... but of course, they could be used throughout that period too - I have seen these come up in excavtion reports up to the 10th Century in Central Europe...

Cheers

In support of the above, the composition of the frame work looks similar to some Gepid and Ostrogoth spangs of the C6th.

The only sources for diamond patterned gambesons that I have seen are of Byzantine origin (Kabbadions) and some later medieval Bulgarian murals show them as well.

Looks to me that the Picture from the Ulfrun site is taken during a training/show (early medieval / viking).
In which also other people/groups were present.
This group has an interest in Rus Vikings.

The gambeson in the picture has a slavic origin, whith these modern ones being made in Russia.

out of interest in slavic kit, is there any evidence of Slav gambeson styles?
I've seen possible diamond pattern ones from the Tomochov psaltair C14th Bulgarian but nothing earlier except Byzantine stuff.
