If you use your pilum for that, you need another one. If the enemy atacks you, you have to throw the impedimenta's pole quickly. Is for that reason romans don't use a back pack as today. With the stuff tied to a pole, you only have to throw the pole, and you are ready for battle.

I think this is still too slow...you probably have to bend your knees, turn the upper body, let the full thing slide down your pilum and if you're ready to fight you are already dead.
