Dan no it is not it is similier to the 1018 mild steel if you do combat you will need spring steel EN45 or EN47, the length you will need is 17-21 " inches long for the blade then the tang I have about 7-8"inches for that depends how big your hands are. then the blade width of the top of my head 44-50mm.

Is the reason it's spring steel is because it's blunt? I don't know if you mean for mock combat, or actual fighting. I don't plan on mock combat with a real gladivs, only needlefelt weapons. I want a real weapon as it because it will psychologically feel more realistic to me, and I'll be prepared for some odd disaster. BTW, thanks for the statistics. (PS, check your PM)

OK, do I need a tranditional anvil, or just a block of cast iron?

Or even an 8 1/2" pice of railroad track?

It really doesn't matter- 'real' anvil, block of steel, railroad track, cast steel anvil- all will do the job. The 'real' anvil will last longest though as it has a hardened steel workface, whereas the others can all be 'dinged'. I have only a cast steel anvil and it's served me perfectly well for on the order of 7 years now.

'Spring steel' refers to a higher carbon, heat-treated/ -treatable material, not anything to do with its shape.

I don't know about any rules for various forms of mock combat but the truth is that high carbon steel is not historically accurate and thus does not make for a good true Roman weapon- if you want to experience what it was really like using one that is; spring steel is great if you want to be sure your weapon doesn't bend, etc. during the action, however that itself is a historically-accurate occurance. There's even a mention in the Laxdaela Saga (Norse) of Keltill I think it was, constantly having to step on his sword to straighten it, so if it happened to Norse weapons, it sure happened to Roman ones so many centuries earlier

Any nicks in the edge or any bends you have to straighten will really make the sword real as doubtless actual Gladii would have had these themselves.

@ Matt, thanks for the videos. THis raises a question, can I use a steel sledge hammer, or do I need one like in the video?

You bet, happy to help. No the hammer they used in those videos is seemingly unique to Japanese swordsmiths- I made one for myself and I rather like it, but it's certainly not necessary. Any good hammer will work. A claw hammer isn't appropriate, but it'll do if there's nothing else, a cross peen hammer is the usual for general forge work. Either a square or octagonal face, and a weight of about 2lbs is a good choice- it's heavy enough to move metal well but not so heavy that it'll wear out your arm really fast.

There are a few references to Gaulish weapons bending but you never hear of the Roman weapons (Gladii to be specific) bending.......obviously Roman superiority in everything coming to the fore..... Tongue

Another factor might be the shorter blade, and the likelihood of a thicker mid rib, eh?

So I add the tang to 17-21 " ? what width is proper? and is the spring steel used in blunt blades, for groups like the SCA? Would FBX steel work. I could get some for free.

First point yes add what you need for a tang to the 17-21" Big Grin ?: So if you just want a blade to look the part, go with the mild steel Big Grin
