Making a Gladius

FBX=Fire Box Steel, a type of mild steel. It's used at my dad's nuke plant.

You might want to consider making the blade a bit more narrow. A lot of the original gladii were narrower than 2". Most mass produced gladii (like deepeeka) are 2" wide. If I went through the trouble of making my own gladius, I'd make something that is a bit different from the mass produced ones most people have. For example a blade 1.8" wide. Just my 2 cents Smile

For some sword measurements, check the last post in this thread. It has about 12 different finds listed with the length of blade and width.

link from old RAT

Only the Newstead Pompeii Gladius is 50mm wide ( 2 inches). The rest are thinner.

Also a small field anvil, In the museum is sats it was used for dressing farming tools out in the fields, but I imagine similar ones could be used for dressing sword edges.
A useful addition to your range I imagine.

I swear Dagraed / Dennis of Comitatus had one just like that on his Ebay shop last week. Not there now, but contact him and he'd be able to knock one out, I'm sure.

Excuse my ignorance, but how would such an anvil be used?

I think it is simply stck in a stump or the ground, the curly bits stopping it from sinking too far? I think tha twas what the bumpph said in the museum....or perhaps just my imagination adding the details....

That sounds right. The hammering surface on the replica one Jim posted is quite small, and this got me confused I think Smile .
Thanks!

I would like to try one of these when it's stuck into the ground. I'd imagine a lot of the force would be lost in the ground, but you never know Smile

Dan Marcvs is right it does not have to be 2" wide the sizes I gave were a guide to the ones that have been found, so long as it falls into this range you will be OK. FBX will be fine so free is good Big Grin D

OK, so if it's too long or wide, It will be taken care of while cutting and grinding? BTW, what is cutting and grinding, and how do I do it?
