Ok Now I have a question. I know that the only find of a vexillum is made out of linen. So is that the only thing you can make one out of? I was going to use a piece of red wool that was left over from my tunic I made. Would this be ok to use?

I've heard of another one, just with a (4-point) star and the four corner elements, that was found in Syria, but never saw a pic of it -- this one was made of wool according to the rumor of its overall existence. To put paint on it, however, wool is terrible compared to linen (unless very VERY fine and densely woven, and even then). So I don't know what's true about the rumour of this (stroke of conincidence) "flag that bears a single star".

Paint isn't the only way to add decoration to the surface. Appliques (like letters cut from another cloth and sewn on, for example) or embroidery are other means to get there. Paint would more than likely be the most common, and tunic wool would not provide the best surface for that, though I think it could be done, it would not be easy. Wool is, well, woolly.
