1st Century Germanic Shield Boss

I'm wondering how Germanic shields were held, whether they had a "Roman" grip or a "Viking" grip, Horizontal or Vertical? Just wondering. :mrgreen:

With a round shield you can't say if the grip is horizontal or vertical.
it just the way how you hold the shield.
But that is another topic.

Aren't all 1st C German ones pointy cones with a flange?

How can one tell if a shield boss is a Roman or Germanic one?
Domed and Pointed were both in use next to each other within the roman empire.
