Not Roman era but Viking era.
During the Moesgard Viking moot in 2009 there were 398 fighters on the field.
We as Hrafntrae took part in the main Battles with 5 fighters.

Yes, I was refering to the third picture you posted, with the guys clearly moving in on the public at a pace. I did some mock fighting for a television shoot, there was only a very small group of combatants, but it could so easily go wrong with people waving sharp spears and pointy swords around. A few inches of blade in the armpit or neckarea and it is curtains. In Holland, a guy (professional fight re-enactor) was killed a few years back before an audience in a well rehearsed fight sequence were he lost count of the blows and stopped a blunt sided sword in the head.

I think that you mean one of the polish knights,
that had a fatal accident at the Land Van Ooit theme park in 1992.
They were even childhood friends.
I spoke with someone of that group a day after this accident.

Yes things can happen, taking part in a battle or a show like this is not without risk for participants and/or public.
However secure you make things, Murphy's Law is always present.
Xanten 2009 !

In 2009 in Moesgard only 2 out of 398 participants had minor injuries that could be solved with an ice pack or a adhesive plaster.

The general Cuneus rule is:

Swords behind your shield if inside the cuneus while running.

First rank, as soon as you reach, ie come close to the audience, sword behind your shield.

That is what keeps it safe...

THIS CLEARLY IS IN VIOLATION OF ALL SAFETY RULES *especially the nutcases holding their swords in stab position above their shields !!! :

(and for me a reason not to attend Namur, no matter what my Centurio wants...)

On the Polish knight, he was supposed to slide his head aside when laying on the ground as the victor stabbed down next to the helmet.
Somehow, he didnt, that killed him.

Accidents can and will happen, if the choreography and safety rules are not adhered to or beforehand known AND rehearsed by all combattants.

First multi period battle in KH, nothing went wrong, it was an occurence which actually came out of the blue and was a lot of fun.
Second time, it was announced by the organisation, we were banned from attending by the ESG with the reason that there could only
come trouble from it since it was not spontaneous anymore.

This was true, a few wounded, one halberd stuck in someones head apparently and some sword lashes and bruises and stab wounds...

So Keep it Safe at all times, we are NOT SCA nor are we LARP.....

Needlefelt weapons look Ok from a distance and are fairly safe for mock battles AND are used at one of the larger Us events Fort Lafe.

No offence but did we not have discussions about these safety matters in the past?
If so, can we reopen or start a new one concerning the safety for participants and public at an event/show.
Where everyone can ventilate his/her meaning, ideas and suggestion.
Let's return to the title of this topic: Largest units / Biggest events ?

I still liked the way safety for public was done in Corbridge. There were 2 lines around the field, with about 4 meters between them. This area made we had some more room when the cavalry was using all of the field, but also we had to stop charging 4 meters before the public line (with all kids sitting on the ground etc.

(Seeing as you've gone as far out as Viking)
Biggest event for me was Hastings 2006. About 2000 on the field. I was in command of the first unit of the center rank at the top of the hill. Small beer compared to the numbers fielded for later period, but a big deal for early medieval.

Whilst it won't be anywhere near that sort of scale, I'm hoping that this years '410' event at Old Sarum will be the largest late roman event staged so far in the UK.

Total number of participants, 0.
Or possibly, for the sake of avoiding a theological debate, 1

Natale di Roma is scheduled this year for 1222 participants as at 12 Feb. Confusedhock:
Over 40 groups are attending.

http://www.gsr-roma.com/

Having attended in 08, with about half that number, it was good fun, though more akin to carnival.

If you rate the quality of event solely by the number of participants... this must be near the top.

There were only that many last time? It should be a pretty amazing specticle this time then.
