The National Trust is looking for help from classicists to figure out what is in this picture, Apollo and the Muses, by Tintoretto.
Here are particulars on what they are curious about, and here is a story by the Guardian.
Are those olive branches Apollo is holding? And what in the world could that die displaying "five" mean? (The die is lower right, out of the frame of the image I posted.)
And interestingly, they can't even figure out if it is Apollo or not. I guess the title of the painting is still up in the air.
I'm at a loss. :?
