hr-replikate Vindonissa eagle pendant - a question
#16
The Vindonissa catalogue says very little about it apart from saying that it is made of tinned brass, but it does give the details of where it was originally published:

A. Gansser-Burckhardt, Das Leder und seine Verarbeitung im roemischen Legionslager Vindonissa. Veroeff. Ges. Pro Vindonissa 1 (Basel 1942)

If someone has access to this they might have a look and see if there is anything more there about it.

So thus far consensus is it's unlikely this thing is an apron terminal. Amirite?

I must say the crescent shape at the bottom does seem to be similar to a lot of apron terminals and there is a stylized hinge there, so maybe some soldier just had a wild flight of fancy?

Looks fully functional as an apron terminal, to me.

If it was a baldric terminal, which part of the baldric would it be fitted to, and would baldrics even be in use at this time?

Most of the discussion is over my head, but when I look at that long hole between the eagle's feet this is what I see. Probably nonsense, though.

Interesting... has any similar buckle ever been found?

I would like an explanation of the two pictures I'm looking at here for they are not the same as far as the holes at the sides are concerned.

I have a set of these, and to be honest, they are not too wide to use as terminals for aprons. A little unusual, but the dangly ones have many far wider.

Could you possibly take pics of those things just laid out on the straps?

I could put them beside another belt, but I have not cut straps yet, as I have not decided on belt plates..too many things to do not done!

Do you perchance have the Deepeeka belt? Could you put them on the apron straps or next to them?

No, it is one from Armillum in Spain!

Once I locate them I will. I moved recently and a lot still packed away! Confusedad:

Found a photo of this being used as apron terminals. Looks the part to me.

Zoom in to the apron of the legionary second from the right(apron straps also stitched at the edges, which is based on a find). The photo's very large.
