Canteen Covers
#1
We have had a recent topic about canteens, and since I have a couple of nice looking round canteen gourds enroute, I thought I'd ask about covers. There is the esparto grass canteen cover found at the Roman Mazzaron mines in Spain. Image linked from an old post by Peroni

Would jute cord be a close approximation of the esparto grass woven in a similar pattern? Esparto is hard to come by here in the Colonies.

During my last visit to Italy I saw a similar cover for a Roman era Glass bottle.

Hopefully someone can help with the Italian translation.
Maybe you can use braided straw?

My Italian is not that good to translate the text.

Maybe you can also use braided straw as a cover.
