How to make a Greek shield from a Winter UFO sled
#1
For the people on a slightly lower budget, here is a shield I made from a winter UFO sled.

Its a rendition of a Greek shield (78 cm diameter, inside 63 cm )and no where near the real stuff, but well, still nice.

Used :

UFO winter sled, Plywood Rim, unbleached linen, messing for interior, DIY rings and other stuff you get at the hardware store, Newspaper, Wood-Glue, Epoxy resin, wallpaper glue, Primer, putty, Spraypaint Gold, wallpaint acrylics.

Cost, less than 100 Euros, dunno the total anymore did not keep the receipts...

Cut rim off :

Make new rim and attach it with Epoxy resin and builder's kit-glue :

Get hardware for inside :

Make inside :

(glue in unbleached linen and prepaint)

First porpax, better looking but too large so had to redo it :

Second Porpax, with mistakes in bending :

Inside before repainting:

Inside with rope :
(epoxied the messing parts as well as riveted them)

Apply newspapers, wallpaper paste, white glue, primer and paint gold...
(will redo the outside later with car putty)

Paint on shield design :
(of course I messed up bigtime, not only on the nose but I forgot to look where the antilable was... So had to turn the shield around when I used it for a farewell drink of my Antiquities professor. Repaint will be in order, as well as putty untill smooth....)

Better images of the shield in action to follow Smile

Not a bad recycle. Whole lot easier than all that plywood gluing and such, isn't it? And I'll bet it is much lighter, too. Probably won't stop a ballista bolt, though....
