Scutum Carrying Strap
#1
Salvete Omnes,

I'm interested in making a marching/carrying strap for my new scutum. I've found several images and sketches but they don't show the attachments and fittings clearly. Can anyone help?
Following photos from Matt Amt's site, I attached brass rings to the two central rivets holding on the boss. A leather strap is then stitched onto the rings.

Here's an image of Scythius with a slung scutum
The dark balteus from his right shoulder, wraps about the hand grip a few times... carry the scutumsideways, upright, cinch it up tighter and higher.... very versatile
Doesn't the scutum bang against your leg like that? When marching, stuff banging against my legs irritates the "bejesus" out of me.
Hiking with the scutum sideways (as in the picture posted above) isn't as comfortable as carrying it upright...using the handle in the manner intended.

HOWEVER, this horizontal position is great for helping other guys adjust kit. et cetera...
Thanks for the responses so far, keep 'em coming. I've fitted a couple of brass rings to the scutum for the strapping with the intention of going for the vertical arrangement. I was looking at the shoulder strap with the additional cross strapping as this would in theory seem to be a good way of keeping the scutum snug without too much leg bashing.

Some of the piccies from Dan Peterson's book show a bunch of Republican legionaries with this arrangement. Regardless of the fact that I'm using a straightsided imperial scutum I'm unsure as to wether or not this cross strapping will actually work with segmentata. Has anyone got any experience with this.

I'm not sure about stitching the strapping permanently to the scutum. Something removable would seem preferable.

Does anyone know the historical/aercheological evidence for carrying straps?
I discovered that the method chosen for strapping a scutum depends upn the kind of scutum you use.

We use the taller wider scutum 46" x 27" or so. If you use the smaller Dura Europas sized scutum its lots easier to strap it to your back.

Strapping them across the shoulder as the Repubs in Peterson book is problematic if you aren't 6' tall... I like the back of my calves to remain unbruised

We're experimenting with a slightly sidestrapped variation, but strapped higher with a snugger strap... we will of course, post our experiences.
I was thinking of making a hook and eye set up like on a lorica segmentata. The eyelet would be attached to the handle, and each hook would be placed on the end of the strap. If you needed to, you could un-hook the scutum in a hurry.
Magnus/Matt
The loops are already on the scutum with the very same idea in mind, I guess this is prime for a bit of experimental archeology.
I'll let you know how I get on.
Nice picture. Although it looks like Scythius' got a busted shoulder guard on his segmentata..
And The Hook: I was looking for the humpteenth time at the famous Alba Julia sculpture --very damaged-- trying to figure out whether it's a segmentata with scale shoulder guards, or a segmentata with a scale hood.
I still don't know and I still try to sketch a decent reconstruction of that guy.
But anyways, looking at that sculpture like that, I finally noticed something.
First: the sword. Our man wears his on the left and it looks pretty much like a spatha with a pelta style chape. Late IInd early IIIrd C.AD.
Then I finally spotted the oh so very obvious: the spatha chape sticks out below the lower part of the shield.
If our man held his shield by the hand grip, there is no way that scabbard chape could stick out under it, whether it's a big or a small rectangular scutum. The shield would go down to mid-calf level and would completely hide the sword.
So I remembered this recently discovered hook on the upper gridle of a segmentata and the interesting conversation we had with Mike Bishop and others about what that hook was there for. The general idea was that it was some sort of carrying device for the shield. That is besides its obvious use, which is to rip open the underarm of the wearer if he isn't careful..
I think that we may see the use of that hook of the Alba Julia sculpture. A strap attached to the scutum and tied to the segmentata hook would put the shield exactly where it is in the sculpture, that is with the lower part slighlty above knee level, showing the lower end of the sword and the upper part a bit above shoulder level. A rough mesure I just took on me --I am 173 centimeters tall/67,5 inches-- would put the shield's height at something like 85 centimeters/33,2 inches.
A last note: as far as I know there are two countries in the world that still stubbornely do not use metric: the United State and Malaysia..
So, no, I don't know how many feet there are in 67,5 inches. It's probably something like 2/5ths of 8/7ths or something.
I know however that 173 centimeters make 1,73 meter and that is simple.
See what I mean?
Just in case, there are very good inches/centimeters converters on the net, and well, you know, majority rules OK..

Edited by: Antoninus Lucretius at: 4/25/04 1:13 pm

Interesting case. It'd have to be one heck of a strong hook to handle the shield weight and all that bouncing while marching. Though you have to wonder, what did the guys in chain mail use?
Magnus/Matt
I looked at the photo, and what's hapening is the plate is kind of 'hooked' on the body of the loculus...
Scythius
Yep Scythius. I thought it was busted because my segmentata has busted leathers on the shoulder guards and they look exactly like the left one.
Yep again Tiberius for the hooks. The resistance of it was indeed one of the things we talked about during that lenghty conversation here a long while ago, with Mike Bishop and others.
The theory was that the hook was used not as a primary way of carrying the shield but as a helper, meaning you still had to hold the hand grip but part of the weight was transferred to the body via the strap.
Of course it's only a theory. The reality being that there a darn hook on the upper gridle of a segmentata found lately in the Balkans (if I remember well) and we're still trying to figure out what the (bleep) it was here for..
ALso, maybe I am repeating the obvious but on marches outside the battlefield the shield was protected by a cover and the straps were probably attached to it, not to the shield.
I never carried a scutum but my idea would be to carry it as high as possible in order to keep my legs free.

Edited by: Antoninus Lucretius at: 4/26/04 1:33 am
