Armor Stand
#1
Avete!

I am thinking of constructing a nice, heavy duty armor stand for my Seggie armor so it won't have to sit there collapsed at the end of the day, per se. and so I can clean it easier.

Is there any reference for a Roman armor stand? Or am I better off just making a stand to my own specs?

A device I was thinking of adding are some small hooks on straps as to hook onto and support the girdle plates at thier buckle points (4 in the back, 2 out on the front ~ corbridge A) because I really don't want to be stressing the leathers on the straps and harnesses any more than I can other than wearing it. A strap has broken already (but it's cheap thin leather which I'll need to replace anyway eventually)

if anyone has suggestions for what works well for configuration and wood, that'll be great. Thanks as always.
-ANDY aka "Roman Dude" Svaviter in Modo, Fortiter in Re
I made a stand from PVC tubing in a T shape. I found it awkward to get the seg on and off the stand. I don't use it much now as it's easier to simply store my seg collapsed.

I had a few rivets pop on mine. There are a number of sites on the web where you can order replacement rivets. See the legio XX site for the links.

Andy, I made a kick-butt one out of wood. a 4X4 for the centre pole, with some 2X4, cut on an angle to simulate a person's shoulders sits near the top for the lorica seggie to hang on. At the top there's enough post left to place my helmet. As you go down under where the seggie hangs, there are series of pegs, for my greaves and caligae to hang. On the right "arm" of the stand, are 2 other pegs where my manica hangs down. On the front are two iron nails that my pugio hangs on as well.

Looks good, and didn't take too long to make. Unfortunately, I don't have any pics.....But Neuralmancer has seen it.
Magnus/Matt
Nice, thanks for the ideas!
Magnus - Yeah I want a multi-purpose stand with doohickies to hang parts, but mostly to support the armor. Like I said I want to try to incorporate some hooks to hold onto the shoulder-to-girdle buckles so as to not stress those leather straps too much...I didn't think of the shoulder plates and a problem of them not sitting "straight"..Something to think of.

If you do get pics or whichever, that'd be great.
Here are some pictures of mine ... I just noticed it's getting a bend in it, my armor must have been off to the side. I'll have to put it on the other side to bend it back
Hi Andy,

An Idea that springs to mind is this:

build a basic stand like those described above, and either attach or just drape over the 'arms' a length of small chain with small s-hooks on the ends. make the chain length just enough to attach the hooks onto the bottom edge of the top girdle plate on each side. this should ease the strain on your leather straps, and solve your problem. does this make sense to you?

Regards,
That's a good idea about having something for the girdle plates to rest on. My one leather is getting a tad stretched, and will likely need replacing soon.
Magnus/Matt
Thanks so much for the tips and pictures. Chains and S hooks, that's a great idea! I was thinking leather straps (heavy duty of course) but chain may be better - and more adjustable, thanks for that suggestion.

I'm thinking if I use a large post for the main upright, and have two sets of arms, 'front and back', which could help support the shoulders...with lots of cushy padding.

One question still - Is there any refrence for an [ancient/Roman] armor stand? At events and encampments, if you guys go sans armor, what do you do with the armor?

"connectazoinks" - I like that!
thanks again for the tips. Any more from anyone else is welcome.
-ANDY aka "Roman Dude" Svaviter in Modo, Fortiter in Re
As far as I thought...the romans may have kept their armour in bags or small chests? Officers may have had them on stands, but I haven't heard of any references of these.
Magnus/Matt
On the march, I'd opine that it went into a oiled leather bag.

In garrison, either the same or a cabinet/chest?
There is one problem with hanging a segmentata on a stand like yours.... Gravity..............

The strain on the leather bands which connect the shoulder plates to the torso section will become so large in due time that your leather wil tear... the hinges might also break..

Me thinks the Romans did not use a stand, but put their armour either in a bag, or put it on the ground... and maybe... in castra, on a shelf...

best wishes...
(PS) not even samurai armour is hung up... it always rests on a chest....
Actually Marcus, the armour is also put on a small, upright stand. It is only for transportation that they were put in chests.
Magnus/Matt
Thanks for the warnings, although you might have missed parts of the earlier posts. My intention from the start is to construct a support system of sorts using straps and hooks (or as suggested chains and S hooks to be more adjustable) that will be used to hold and suspend the girdle plates at the 6 (4 in back, 2 in front - Corbridge A)buckles from where the straps attatch to the shoulder plates. I am hoping this will alieviate stress on those shoulder-to-girdle straps. The shoulder plates I am hoping to make (thanks to suggestions from posters here) a rack that will support the shoulder plates like "real" shoulders so the plates don't fall off the stand!

It's too much of a bother and stress on the back 4 straps to unstrap them and then suspend the armor on the stand - instead I'll be able to hook the buckes on the girdle plates, and rest the shoulder plates on the rack, the straps will be loose, but still connected; but have the girdle plates suspended so there is no gravity stress to those straps.
Does this make any sense?

So, instead of dissasembling everything and then placing it on the stand, I'm thinking I'll keep everything together, and throw the armor onto the stand much like I would be putting it on my body - Like a vest (keep it simple!)

Another idea I have is to have the stand only high enough that the girdle plates maybe have an inch or so clearance from the base/ground...Or have the plates rest/sag slightly on the floor or base so that will also take off undue stress on the buckles and harness straps alltogether.

The stand is intended for storage inbetween my alternate-weekend programs I give, to help reduce the stress/wear on those straps, and to make it much easier to clean and oil after use (I don't like seeing it collapsed and ontop of itself in the box for a week, nor sprawled out on the floor...Ever step accidentally on your armor or bang into it? Ouch)...As for transportation...I'm using a spacious Tupperware Tub with Wheels from car-to-destination transport, otherwise the armor is collapsed but supported in the box or it's on me.

thanks again for the suggestions.
