Roman Cavalry Equipment???
#1
I was giving a class today at a local school, and one of the students asked a question that I couldn't answer. I will be ordering a couple of books, but maybe someone has an off the top answer. Did Roman and auxiliary cavalry wear cingulim? Was there a dangling apron on their military belt?

Fabius,

I can remember not only one illustration with a cavalryman wearing the dangling apron known from legionary or auxiliary infantry. And I think it would not be senseful as the rider is sitting on his saddle and the apron would not be able to dangle.

IIRC, the apron has the function of (little) protection for the abdomen as well as impressing the enemy by the noise caused by thousands of advancing infantrymen whose arms rattle and clink metallically.
Which leads to the next question, were the dangly bits a part of the "military belt"? What did a citizen or resident of the First or Second Century Roman Empire recognize as a "Military Belt"? Were Roman cavalry and auxiliary cavalry recognized by some other means when not in uniform?
