Mainz trip (RAT gathering, 15-18 FEB 02)
#61
Salve,

Martin, thanks again for putting together the schedule of the past days. It was great.

The thought of it being used to secure a carrying strap or harness (either for the shield or a set of phalerae) also occurred to me. It seems at an awkward position to be used for keeping the sword baldric in place.

Regards,
With your last sentence ("awkward position for keeping a sword baldric in place") you're absolutely right, Sander, but I still can't quite imagine it being for a shield string because it's still positioned right under the arms of the soldier which I imagine very uncomfortable, especiallly with a big shield hanging from it! Besides, I don't think it would have been strong enough for the weight of, let's say, a scutum.
And we should remember: the hooks were at both sides, one would have been enough if it was intended for a shield (string). I like the idea with the phalerae better, but on the other hand we should not forget that the hooks might have been attached secondarily, maybe at a time when the segmentata was not in use as a cuirass anymore.

For the poor people who had not the chance to see the original: we are talking about one quite strong hook (ca 3 cms long) at each SIDE of the segmentata, punched through from the inside of the second girdle plate (from the upper end) and opening upwards.

##Could someone please transfer this new discussion to the military history section?? (It's NOT reenactment or reconstruction to me, as you might understand... ##

Think I will not change my user name (I'm a signifer now! Think about how much money I would lose! Has anyone ever seen a signifer in the roman fleet? Oh, another topic...); only will change my signature into:
Eeehh: yes! There is one in CIL X, 1080 and in XI, 6107. Can't find them online (yet). And anyway, I think Jenny should allow for a second careerpath including trierarch, navarch and Praefectus Classis.

BTW, today I got the Konen book on the Classis Germanica. Nearly as thick as Reddé's one on the whole fleet. Bloody h*ll!
Greets
No, the Mainz trip thread will stay in Off Topic, BUT I have amended the History forum to include archaeology and a convenient new Stillfried thread is just waiting for the continuation of the debate.
Jenny, you've done me a great favour! Finally, archaeology receives the attention it deserves at RAT. Why didn't I just think of that during the weekend?
No worries, Martin, it seemed a very natural thing to do. Enjoy! We should now begin our London planning. Are you going to go with Jasper, Sander, and I?
Jenny, I think this is just the right moment to open a new thread for London in this section. I'm not sure whether I can come (quite pessimistic, to be honest), but would love to.
Well, I certainly hope so! We will have some fun times in those cozy London pubs after the day's serious conference sessions.

I don't know, though, if we can find anything quite like this for you to model!
