Mainz trip (RAT gathering, 15-18 FEB 02)
#16
I started to develop a plan for our tour and also to activate a few "connections" in Mainz; will post my progress in this thread.

Great idea to rent a car! This will enable us to see more sites out of the city centre and around Mainz than I expected. I'll take this into consideration while working on the schedule.

IMPORTANT: As the meeting is from friday to monday, I need to know when on friday we want to meet and when on monday we'll leave. Friday should be at least half a tour day, because special arrangements are difficult to make for the weekend and all the museums in Mainz are closed on mondays.

Maybe I'll come back to Jenny's proposal and apply for a bed (or whatever) in Luca's motorvan, because I'll have to keep my costs as low as possible - don't forget I'm a student!

Greetings,
About beds availability on my Motorcaravan: could be available only one bed, because I'm planning to come with 1-2 friends. But it is not sure. In case I will give priority to you as "poor" student... :-)

About parking, no problem, for me it's enough a normal parking place, hopefully not close to a road with heavy traffic...

Is everyone above still on for Mainz? I need to finalize the numbers of people still going and make the hotel reservations.

Martin and Jasper -- status report, please?
Cheers,
OK, I'll come up from Heidelberg with my Ford Escort and we'll hope we have no more than two small cars and Luca's caravan can handle! E EM
I am about to finish a programme for the tour but I'm still waiting for a few answers from people in Mainz which are decisive for the time schedule.

My proposal for places to visit will include the Landesmuseum, the RGZM and the Museum für antike Schiffahrt in Mainz, along with the "Eichelstein" (supposed kenotaph of Drusus), the roman theatre, the aquaeduct, the Kastel foundations of a monumental arch and the Weisenau graves displayed in situ (all in Mainz); in the region around Mainz we should visit the museums in Wiesbaden and Bad Kreuznach (including important soldiers' gravestones). Further suggestions appreciated!

Day-by-day schedule proposal follows (am very busy at the moment); think I will bring 2-3 colleagues of mine (no accomodation or car needed for them) if we get to see the Stillfried segmentata.

Greetings,
Wonderful, Martin! Will it be possible to take photographs and videos freely everywhere we're going?
In the Museum für antike Schiffahrt, the various sites in Mainz (many outdoor) and in Bad Kreuznach it will be no problem, I suppose; will ask for permission at the RGZM, Landesmuseum and in Wiesbaden in advance.
I remember that it was allowed everywhere. No flash allowed in the Landesmuseum, and the guards are very watchful!
E EM That's German efficiency for you!

Martin, it would be great if we could get special permission to use flash in the L'museum.
I will come with all video and photograph instruments too. So I will compete with you for the best image/video coverage of this "event". But in case I will share with everyone my stuff.
:-) :-)
You know that I love nice pictures.

About my caravan. I don't know Mainz, probably I was there when I was a child, so I don't if it is easy to find a parking place and to move with it.
The best is to find a parking place close to your hotels and then to move together with the cars.
What do you think?

Any news about the famous new austrian lorica?

Mainz is not the easiest city to navigate in, at least not from my brief experience! But we will have a "native" along so it shouldn't be too difficult.

Jasper, we may need three cars at this rate. Please try to get a van or something capacious.
OK, I will go ahead now and find us a hotel in the city center, as near as possible to the Landesmuseum since it's an easy landmark. Alternatively, we can find a place near the Hbf and that will probably be easier for Luca to park at, anyway.

Jasper and Sander, the two Dutchies, will room together. Luca and his friends will be in the RV, possibly with Martin? I will reserve a couple of extra rooms and just cancel if we don't need them. Is Dan Peterson coming along also?

We should have enough cars to go around; if not, we can find a rental car place through the Tourismus.

It'll be a blast!
Still waiting for answer in the case of the segmentata; wrote to the guy responsible via snail mail from our institute. He's got no email address and I didn't want to phone.

First special arrangement I got the permission for: we will be allowed to take a look at the wood conservation unit in the Museum für antike Schiffahrt (on Monday morning in my provisional schedule).
We have reservations for Mainz at the Hotel Schottenhof, Schottenstr 6, very near the train station. We are staying three nights -- Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

I have reserved one single room for myself, and two double rooms, one of which is for Jasper/Sander, the other for ???

Would anyone like to claim one of these two beds? If there are no takers (I will assume Luca and Martin can lodge in the RV together), then I will cancel the room before we go.

The rate for the doppel rooms is 72 EUR/night. Not bad if you have a room mate. These include shower and breakfast.

To see a map of the local area, go to www.mainz.de/tourist/plan/plane/b1.htm

Any questions/issues at this point?

Cheers,
