What If The Romans Had Aircraft?
#31
Quote:then send in the legionaries by train to finish them off.

Trains, they'd have tanks, they suit the Romans perfectly, heavly armored and lots of killing power.

armoured trains with ballistas skorpions and a couple of flat cars for ballons that could be reeled out to give air cover and maybe drop bottles of oil with a lit wick in it

Thanks for the replies...

So it's decided for CAS operations the A-10 Hog is just too good for a Roman to pass up.

What about other eras? How about WW2? (P-47 Thunderbolt is the given list topper heheh)

WW1?

Doesn't have to be an American aircraft either...

Yeah, I can see Romans flying the Macchi 202, as well as any Italian aircaft for the WW2 genre for the topic.

Though I'm still on with Romans liking the P-47 for ground attack and escort/CAP.

I think Romans would have liked the British Hurricane. Simple, durable, nimble. And with those .202's going off like crazy, they probably would have liked that.

I can see the Macchi 202 for a dedicated interceptor/fighter though, too.

I bet they also would have loved the FW-190 and the P-38 Lightning too.

I would think that for WW2 era the Romans would have gone for Henschel Hs129's with the 37mm or 75mm cannon those crazy Romans went in for the bigger is better thing after all! they might also have liked the Bristol Beaufighter lots and lots of rockets and then a brace of 20mm cannon. But what about the enemy? I can see Gauls/Britons being entranced by the good looks and manouverabillity of the Reggiane 2000 series or the macho excess of the ME210/410 and the sheer destructive sillyness of the Bachem Ba349 Natter.
P.s the Hurricane had 8-12 browning .303's or 4 20mm hispano's and some 2 40mm AT Vickers S guns with 2 .303's (my grandad flew Hurricanes in the war so I get all possesive about them)
