Hello all

I found today that the battle of red vs white does not just stem from the mid 1980's and reenactment but in fact goes back to Rome itself.

The true bit: In the earliest quadriga horse racing their were only two camps for you to stand in, the reds or the whites. Then later a third, the greens was added and finally the blues. Each camp defended its position as best and often resulted in roiting, banning and violent argument with neither side giving quarter.

The silly bit: So presumably, if we have it right, the reds were beyond doubt the hardest men aloive, able to eat iron billets and spit out rusty lorica complete with battle damage and the whites looked great, shone like the sun but couldn't walk more than five feet without sullying their tunics.

The greens will undoubtedly be auxillia and as such not have learnt to wash (if Hollywood has taught me anything) and the blues will be marines and won't really care.
All the best
Graham Ashford

Ah those Hollywood Romans...

I guess this means that, if these sources are indeed correct, the Praetorian Guard did wear black armor.
Time to throw out the books and fill my library with DVD's. I wonder what new learning Gladiator II will impart to us--we wait in rapt anticipation.
