TROY TROy TRoy Troy ....troja
#1
Argh

So, get this.... on US TV, on the Discovery Channel they did a 2 hour commercial for TROY the movie, aired Wed May 12.

They did a psuedo documentary.. hired "combat experts", used the West Points monster battle simulating computer, they tested replica weapons on a pig carcass, shot bronze tipped arrows, used a professional javelineer to toss replica javelin...

Ok.. the best movie scene.. they showed many clips from the movie... the best was from a scene in front of the walls of Troja.. charging Greeks, firm standing Tojans. The Greek line (mob.. good grief!) running at full speed (absolutely stupid!) anyway... at one point the bodies start to pile up after the initial clash and they show men clamboring and leaping over the dead and dying to get at each other.. now that was spectacular.. been there, done that.

Oh, lots and lots of Trojan arrows...that was good too... dropping Greeks like ducks in an arcade shooting game.

Another..... showing a bent bronze sword after hacking the pig body.

One "combat expert" was actually surprised that a bronze tipped thrusting spear penetrated the carcass.. like duh!

To prepare for the computer battle simulator thay tested weapons: Javelin
Arrow
Sword
and the speed at which armed warriors could run 20 meters

Javelin.. repilica. They used a competive javelineer. He could toss it 40 meters, more accurate at 30 meters, at a standard archery round target, would have been nice if they armored him.

The Arrows and bow they were using.. it could only hit a standard archery round target at about 40 meters.. 50% of the time....bronze tipped arrow with large flights.. supposed replica arrows.. But the bow... no mention of its historicness or draw strength

Sword... a bronze replica.. looked like a DPKA

Running warriors.. who were these guys?

NONE, not one of the so called weapons experts, combat experts (whatever...!) had ever used simulated weapons and armor in competetive combat. None of them have viewed trained combatants doing it.

One of them spoke of the initial adrenelin rush and how it would quickly wear off, leaving the warrior exhausted. Good grief!
Is this the 'Trojan Horse' episode from the 'unsolved history' series? That's the only one I can see listed for may 12th..
Troy is all over the place on billboards and on the sides of buses in Paris and of course the TV is full of "informations" about it.
Among those "informations" you have the "leaked" detail that Brad Pitt, who valiantly tries to portray Achilles dressed up in the male version of a Xena outfit, is actually shown naked.
Omygosh..
After Janet Jackson's "accidental" tit show at the Superbowl, we are served with Brad's butt.
Ain't we lucky?
Sheeesh..
Incidentally, ugly rumours abound according to which
a stand in was used for Brad's legs, because his are a bit too skinny...
Try bicycling, Brad!
The few bits I saw on TV were totally appalling. That included hordes of black leather clad digital persons rushing at each other Lord of the Rings style and another special efect showing "Achilles" plunging his sword into his opponent's neck.
All in all, factory made industrial cinema. Not worth mentioning.
Disappointing coming from a director that gave us "Das Boote"..

Actually, it was quite amazing. If you can take it for the story that it is, and ignore what some people term "historical innacuracies" and enjoy the film, then you won't be disappointed at all.

The journey of achillies and Paris, and Hector was amazing. The writers were really able to pull you in to the story.

See the movie before judging it...if all anyone has to complain about is the lack of evidence for their armour and weapons...please spare us the usual "purist" arguments this time?
Magnus/Matt
Yes, it was quite entertaining, but don't expect to get anything like the Iliad (as the credits say, "inspired by Homer's The Iliad").
10 years compressed into about a month, people dying (and not dying) at unexpected times, a complete absence of the gods (and a resultant appearance of strange motives for things). Oh, and the movie went cheese for me when the hay-bales caught fire...

But still quite impressive, and several clever moments; I'm thinking of one in particular near the end, which anyone who's ever taken Latin ought to appreciate.

Edit: Here's a nice little overview of some of the inaccuracies:
well, the best part about this movie for teachers is...
with three of four simple questions, they can find out if their students actually read the "Illiad" or just went to see the film called "Troy".

Lots of good action!
Never say the term "Troia" at high voice in Italy...:
in our slang it means "whore" and moreover of the worst kind...
Given the state of the archeology on this period, is it even really clear what accurate WOULD look like? I guessing that trying to stage an "accurate" depiction of the Trojan War would be a pointless exercise; surely trying to do so would have only made it MORE "controversial" to historic purists. Some would want to see Mycenean, some Greek "Dark Ages" and early iron age stuff, etc.

I'm mainly concerned that it look good (which, I suppose is rather subjective) and have a good story. From the pictures I've seen so far, I'm not sure that I like the look they've come up with, not being a fan of that whole "leather cuirass" look. (Unlike the LOTR series, which, though quite inaccurate to Tolkien's descriptions of armor/ weapons, etc., looked awesome imho). The notched "pseudo-Boetian-shield" look is kind of interesting, though. I wonder what the thought was on that? Anyway, I intend to try to keep an open mind when I watch it.
Overall it was MUCH better than I expected... the changes didn't bother me at all and most of them made perfect sense in the context of the movie (i.e. the deaths that don't happen in the mythology).

The only bad part for me was the score. It was terrible -- and you know why? They replaced the score at the last minute because of bad test screening reviews. The guy that did the original score put some excerpts up on his website and they're SO SO much better than the soundtrack we get in Troy.

The stuff I hated was the constant repetition of the wailing woman... it was so high-pitched and grating on the ears that it gave me a headache. They used it at least three times if not more -- during the opening, the landing on the shores, and during the aftermath of the Achilles vs Hector duel.
That's the link to the guy who was SUPPOSED to do the soundtrack (he's done, among many other movies, The English Patient and Cold Mountain). Click on News, then on "The Score for Troy" under Movie Soundtracks to listen to the samples.
