Leather question : moccasin
#1
Avete,

I've been wondering if moccasin would be a plausible fabric to use for reconstructing Roman boots.

On a website I bumped into it states that:

Quote:moccasin has been worn since man first began to craft his own clothing from the hides of animals.

Based on that alone I would think the answer to my question is "yes" but I want to get some more advice/info before proceeding. Can someone please weigh in here about this ?

Thanks.

I imagine that depends on your definition of "moccasin". Are you refering to that particular style of footwear or the leather used to make it?
If "A" then you can find examples through-out the ages but nothing that looks EXACTLY like current images. If "B" then no. Most Moccasins today are made with from chrome tanned sueded leather. You'll want vegetable tanned leather for most shoes.

Hope that helps.

Ave Scaevola,

I meant "B" - the latter.

Here's the boot I wanted to modify made by Pillaged Village :

So this is unusable :?:

Oh well :|

Thanks for the education Smile

Indeed, 'moccasin' not a type of leather, it's the general name for the soft leather, slipper-like footwear worn by native North Americans.

I've seen a number of Roman shoes, but none resembles the moccasin- they all have closures on top in the form of lacing loops. Here are a few examples: [url:3cxix7gl]http://www.curlesnewstead.org.uk/platexx.htm[/url]
