Nation - Canada
Dates of service - 1995 - 2000
Branch of service - Army Infantry Reserves
Description or photo of uniform/gear
Well, this is basically what I wore (the guy in the shot is a friend of mine)

I have more pics at home, one of me in combats and one in a dress uniform, i'll try and post'em.

Weapon(s) - I received training on the following weapons:

Rank - Corporal

Critique on weapons and gear
Well, at the time the forces were severely under-funded. It's only getting better now, since Canada has taken on a greater role in UN and Nato missions. The uniforms were pretty good as far as being quick-drying and durable, but the boots weren't all that good for the spine, as they had a pretty hard sole and junky in-soles. Wasn't a huge fan of the scope, it tended to become un-zeroed pretty easily. The new equipment that the Army has is right up to date and pretty solid.

Any other interesting information from your time in the service.

Just the usual stuff, like putting stones or weights in our platoon commander's rucksack before we went out on a ruckmarch. Big Grin
I have a lot of stories, but they're better in person.

Quote:thats what they told us in training, not to pick up enemy weapons too much, so i figured that. they said if were in the desert saran wrap, cndom, or anything around the muzzle will help a little.

They simply didn´t want yo uto find out that the "other side" might have been issued with better "toys" than yours

Hi all!

United States
1980-1983
Marine Corps, Infantry, A 1/6 2nd Marine Division
Camo BDUs, M16A1. I never had much trouble with it. M1955 Flak jackets, Vietnam era 782 gear (web gear), C-rations. Later we had kevlar Flak jackets and food changed to MREs. (Liked C-Rats better.)
Rank at discharge was Corporal.
One interesting thing was one day while turning weapons in at the Armory I saw a mortarman in front of me with a 60mm tripod dated 1945! This was in 1982! Helmets were Vietnam issue as well.

Please remember my old Battalion in your prayers. They are now in Ramadi, Iraq and have suffered 10 KIA since September and some wounded.

Well they used to make staff in the "Old Days"

In Avlona we had an operational truck REO MOTORS 1945 :!:
And in the border we had a "crane/recovery" on Sherman cassis 1948 :!:
And that was 1991. Yo umight find it hart to belive but I assure you it is true.
Kind regards

I don't doubt what your telling me Stefanos. If the piece of euipment still works, use it. In fact I just remembered something. When we were in Northern Norway in January-February 1981 we used WW1 ponchos buttoned together for tents! They were like brand new and worked just fine. At least thats what we were told they were. I never saw or looked for a date on them. I did see a WW1 poncho last year in a antique shop and it looked the ones I remember using in Norway.

probably not going to be much of an issue ever anyway, my unit isnt the kind they usually send overseas (it went once, in 1918, one company, its one of the oldest michigan units in continual existence)

Totally agree Andy as I mentioned in my ealrier post on winter gear.
What I find strange is that some older staff seem to be almost indestructible compared to modern "fast wearing out thingies".

so you were in right at the end of the cold war stephanos. A good friend of mine was a Lt. in the bulgarian army from '87-'93, he said things were thrown into turmoil when the soviet union fell apart, and at one point during their transition governament (1990 i think for rumania) the men werent getting paid, and started walking off, some of the officers were selling weapons, he finally had to pick up a rifle and threaten to shoot some of the men to keep them there.

did you guys see any results of anything in 1991? from albania maybe?, i know europe was just changed so quickly at that time.

Hmmm, I wuz in the Navy. We had blues, we had whites. We had combinations. They were trying to get away from traditional Navy uniforms to this ugly, pain-in-the-ass to take care of "ice cream man" look crap. Traditional Navy uniforms worked better. And there's a reason for stuff, however... the rocket scientists wanted everyone to look all technical.

Now I read they're going to... no sh*t, some kind of blue/grey camo field-type uniform. LOL! How stupid! Sailors should wear sailor uniforms, not try and copy Army crap. Typical of the morons who infest the pentagon. 'Tis a sad state of affairs.

Yes John, the Balkans went through tough times in the 90s.
In Albania with the financial colapse a "chinese" Kalasnikof could be obtained for 350 $ and a "russian" for 500$!!!
That gave Greek, Italian and Skopjan Police forces a hard time.
I was at the border at the time and it was not nice.
Now even the Albanians manged to "pull the strings" but the damage was done. I wouldn't be surprized if you tell me that US troops have found weaponry with Albanian markings were you are located.

Marsh you get the morons every where.
Here the changed the old more terrain fitting type of vechicle cammo with the style the Us Army had in the German Forests which it totally unrelating to our terrain.

Kind regards

its kinda like the ACU in a greyish color for us in michigan, thats right PINE FORESTS, the old woodland BDUs are much better for here if the need ever arose, theres a large supply, if were in the forest we should wear forest camo id say. the new ACU is theoretically "universal camo", but is a little too dark. It is also supposed to be quieter, so they put on guess what?..........A zipper, and velcro everything.

I myself own a romanian kalshnikov made into semi-auto, i use it for hunting predators.
