not to mention a well-muscled sword arm. I must admit the cavewoman part of me rather sides with the Gauls (you know, that beautiful man of 'the dying gaul' sculpture...I think I fell in love with him as a teen).
I reckon women like the the guys who look most like warriors and less like geeky wannabes..! ;-)
I am still trying to figure out what a cell phone in the undies has to do with tunic color, although I guess it might make the ladies notice you!

Edited by: Caius Fabius at: 1/12/03 2:20:30 am

Of course Caius, there is the old joke of the pager/cell phone set to vibrate...with someone calling you every second....that could explain the strategic placement of the phone in the undies...

Hey, that kind of "technologicum auxilium" is not interesting to me...

Well, at our next event in April or May, that problem there
will be again: how can I communicate to the event staff and people without a cell phone or a walkie-talkie? And where can I handly put it while wearing a full legionary kit?

Any suggestion is welcome (but not easy and vulgar humour please...
For authentic communication you could try using musical signals with cornu and tuba or even using the standards if the various signalling methods detailed in Signalling in the Roman army seem too much work to reconstruct for an event of just a few days (the torch systems would work better at night).
What about those headphones with earpieces that singers wear - you could probably conceal the mike in the helmet pretty well, the only problem would be the battery/transmitter would be a bit uncomfortable under the armour. I don't know what sort of uniform you wear, but it could probably be hidden under a fake breastplate decoration or strategically placed drape of cloak.
Standards sounds like an authentic way of doing it, if there were a limited number of messages that you needed to relay.
You could also use various gestures and hand signals used by professional base ball players, although I am not sure what grabbing your crotch might indicate E EM

Ok, ok folks

But using flags, or cornu, or tuba, or baseball signs to know why the breakfast croissants and cappuccino for the legionaries are so late to come, or talking to the Archeological Service, or with the Police Manager about the the daily interpretation of the gladii blades danger, could be not so easy

Yes, the best thing is the micro-headphone, but if I keep my cell-phone under the segmentata, I cannot dial (the voice commands are not so sure...).
Know what I would do Titus? The first time I did a parade, I made a leather satchel, a la roman style, where I carried some tools, leather thongs, etc. in case I had a breakdown and had to do a field repair. You could make a similar cell phone case, and sling it so it was around your back or something, and out of danger. If someone tells you it's not authentic, I would simply respond to them, that it isn't a real battle now, is it?

Sure... That drives me to think that some balearic slingers, from the roman lines, could throw a vicious round of ringing cell-phones towards the enemy and destroy it, because any barbarian jammed the action yelling: "it's my cell-phone, it's my cell-phone!".

In the meanwhile, a part of the public thought: really? The Romans were so rich they did not care of the cost of the cell-phones and used them like stones or lead bolts to impress the enemy? And did the barbarians send MMS to the Romans with their asses pics to provoke them?
Cellular phones dropped rapidly out of use in ancient Rome after they discovered people with a zero in their number could not be dialed with a keypad using Roman numerals.
