Speaking of Transverse Crests...
Do we have a date as to when this was adopted and put into use by the Centurions as a symbol of their rank?
It is something that it began with the Principate or did it start with the post-Marian legions and slowly spread throughout the army?
Or is this one of those many questions for which there is no definite answer?
(I searched the threads but did not see this discussed -- if it has I would be grateful if someone will point my in the right direction with my apologies for the repetition.)
