javelin quivers
#1
When a number of short javelins were carried by foot soldiers, often shown being carried behind the shield and I assume being carried in the same hand as the shield, were these carried in quivers? Otherwise how was it done? Has anyone any references to these and any pictures? Has anyone had a go at reconstruction?

thanks

With a vertical handgrip it's no difficulty to carry three or four javelins of around 3/4" diameter. With a horizontal handgrip, you have to use the thumb and one or more fingers to hold the javelins, and the other fingers hook the grip. It's pretty tiring, at least I found it so. Can't say how they did it, but you're right, that's what the pictures and engravings I've seen show.

Anybody look behind the shields on the stele?
