Scutum carrying strap
#16
Hi guys,

Regarding carry straps for the scutum, I've just read this information on another thread which might change people's ideas:-

Re: shield glue musing
..... Also. A suspension ring was mounted in the eleven o'clock position (as seen from behind the shield) about two thirds of the way from the center.
Methinks every reenactor should get Simon James' book.
...And a happy new year 2 758 A.U.C...

Having fitted this ring to my own scutum, a single strap threaded through the carry handle and this ring is all that's required, mounted over the right shoulder, to carry the scutum.

I hope to post a photo of this at a later date.
There's a painting in the 9th edition of Junkelmann's book showing how they carried it. If it's of any help I could scan it tomorrow?

I got the 9th "expanded" edition of "Die Legionen des Augustus" this month. I mentioned it because I don't remember seeing this pic in the older version I once had. It's on page 177.

I don't know when the new things were added but compared to the original the 2003 edition contains quite some new stuff and updates.

So, is it worth buying the new version if you have the older version and do not read German very well?
