banded helmets of the 5th century question (finished St. Vid
#24
Hallo,
Christian Miks' book "Vom Prunkstück zum Altmetall" link from old RAT
shows two "Bandhelme" from the "Römisch Germanisches Zentralmuseum"/Mainz (D).
The first one, Inventory Number O. 42732 is given as "Östlicher Balkanraum (Eastern Balkans) ? .....Band-Spangenhelm....., ....spätrömisch-frühbyzantinisch (lateroman-early byzantine) ?"
The second one, Inventory Number 23494 is from a grave in Mainz-Bretzenheim (found 1907), now as copy also in the RGZM.
Dating is ~500/early 6th century.
Hope this has been helpful.
