As a side note to the thread, I may add that in the next months a new tipology of late roman helmets and armor will be published in a book by Damien Glad, archeologist and also member of the Herculiani Big Grin

You have both just the time to learn french before it get book shops!
"O niurt Ambrois ri Frangc ocus Brethan Letha."
"By the strenght of Ambrosius, king of the Franks and the Armorican Bretons."

This 'banded' helmet is coming up for auction in December.
Listed as "A Very Rare Migration Period Iron Helmet 5th/6th Century"...doesn't look right to me. I'd have said later medieval?

Huh, that one's interesting, it's a little different. I still don't trust the dating on all these things, and would REALLY love to know if any were found as datable stratified finds, or if they're all river finds, discovered in grandad's attic, etc. Except for this last one, they all seem to be VERY consistent in their construction (with the caveat that some have one band, and some have 2), and all surprisingly well-preserved. And no decoration. So, ARE they actually dated to the 5th or 6th century? Are they fakes? Are they modern helmets of some kind, simply misidentified? (The WWII German ME262 helmet springs to mind!)

History's mysteries!

Hallo,
Christian Miks' book "Vom Prunkstück zum Altmetall" link from old RAT
shows two "Bandhelme" from the "Römisch Germanisches Zentralmuseum"/Mainz (D).
The first one, Inventory Number O. 42732 is given as "Östlicher Balkanraum (Eastern Balkans) ? .....Band-Spangenhelm....., ....spätrömisch-frühbyzantinisch (lateroman-early byzantine) ?"
The second one, Inventory Number 23494 is from a grave in Mainz-Bretzenheim (found 1907), now as copy also in the RGZM.
Dating is ~500/early 6th century.
Hope this has been helpful.
