This 'banded' helmet is coming up for auction in December.
Listed as "A Very Rare Migration Period Iron Helmet 5th/6th Century"...doesn't look right to me. I'd have said later medieval?

Huh, that one's interesting, it's a little different. I still don't trust the dating on all these things, and would REALLY love to know if any were found as datable stratified finds, or if they're all river finds, discovered in grandad's attic, etc. Except for this last one, they all seem to be VERY consistent in their construction (with the caveat that some have one band, and some have 2), and all surprisingly well-preserved. And no decoration. So, ARE they actually dated to the 5th or 6th century? Are they fakes? Are they modern helmets of some kind, simply misidentified? (The WWII German ME262 helmet springs to mind!)
