hello Gaiten
no need to be so formal - Dariusz or Dario is just about fine, please Smile
While you can reach Dr Farrokh at his website, I am sure he will be very happy to hear your kind remarks about his works and influence http://www.kavehfarrokh.com/
I will relay your message ...
Kaveh's book has got plenty of info on the subject, but I will ask my friend Patryk, who studies Sassanian military, about the standards etc. But you can always use the image of the wild boar http://www.hp.uab.edu/image_archive/ugp/textile04.jpg or Simurgh/senmerv - the dragon-peacock http://www.hp.uab.edu/image_archive/ugp/textile01.jpg , red hearts, disc with a crescent moon, star and crescent moon = got to look at the coins http://books.google.com/books?id=iQ0YAA ... y&as_brr=3 or here from gems comes lion and dragon - http://books.google.com/books?id=6MBHAA ... y&as_brr=3 or ram head with wings, rider on horse or a stag, pomegranate etc

Hi Dariusz,

thank you for the helpful links.

IBFD starts in 410AD, the Visigoths are rampagning in Italia. Franks, Alemanni threaten Gaul and Northern Italia, Saxons and Celts fight Romano-British. Vandals are up to conquer Spain and Africa, Moors want to "liberate" Africa.
Eastern Empire will have to fight off the Hun avalanche and somewhat find a peaceful agreement with Sassanid Empire.
Persarmenia will have to fight for their independence and religion.
Sassanians will have to suffer a very powerful invasion of Hephtalites and Kushanshar will take advantage of any weakness Eranshar will show.

Much to fight for Smile

I forgot to add that he is a 5th century warrior.
If I understood correctly the Savaran of that era were more of the lancer typ, so I decided to make all Savaran units (besides the Royal Immortal Guards (Zhayyedan) to lancers.

Sent you out an email. Thanks for the offer of more illustrations. I will be collecting as many as I can.
I don't have any design on paper yet. But have been talking to the bowyer quite a bit and we seem to be getting close to something that will make both of us happy. It's not like this will be my only bow, but it will be the only one I have that much time and money invested in.(Well maybe  ) So I want to get it as near right as possible.

Dariusz,

do you (or another forum member) the names of Sassanid Savaran units?

I know the Immortals (Zhayyedans), the Gyan-Avspar (Sacrificer), the Khosrowgetae, the Waralz, the Peroozetae and the "Golden Spearmen" (Zarrin Nizagan).

But there have to be more.

Any help will be appreciated.

Salve,
I do not know any more names than what you already have listed Sad I read them in the K. Farrokh's book .. and nowhere else.

....as per bows - I looked at some iconography from Ms Sylvia Winkelmann article that Patryk sent me. Looking at the images it appears that the Parthians there are at least 4 types of bows and they are being held by the Parthian rulers in their coin images. With some very different ending tips (siyah) - some looking Persian , some Scythian, some almost Sassanian and some completely different... Perhaps there was quite a variety in bows as well during the later periods.

The fellows name is Kahim Bel Haj.
Over a 400 year span bow design is going to change plus other ethnic influences from outside.
Guess you have to pick an age and try for the most representative.

Dariusz, I am just curious, our mentioned old drawnings of Savaran knights. Do you mean those displayed in an old Ancient Warfare issue?

Hello,
when I meant 'old drawings' I did mean those related to the Ancient Warfare magazine preparations, but they were never shown outside our immediate circle, i.e. Patryk, AW mag editor and I.
Like the samples bellow - ... and others, including Achaemenid, Saka and Sarmatians.

They are fantastic.

The first has to be a 6th-7th century Savaran and the second looks like that one displayed on the famous cameo showing Shapur I. capturing Valerian, does not it?

A question, for my gamemodding I used neshans and Drafsh coat-of-arms symbols (sometimes combined) as decorations for the upper body`s vest/muscle armor. Would that be historically correct?

hey Andreas,
thanks for your kind words.
And you are correct, the first was to represent a 6-7 century Savaran/artestaran , while the second was a sketch based on Patryk's drawing of the Shapur I via the famous cameo. The Shapur one is not finished yet I am looking to achieve still more realistic look using Phs and Painter , while I will eventually rework the first image that was done as an ink drawing.

The decorations on armour and vests, I am not sure, I think Kaveh's book is the best source for that information.
I do think they wore kantush coats on top of their armour, and these most likely were decorated - like those in the Roman army finds from Egypt, but that garment was removed and/or stored before the engagement.
I have not seen any visual sources aka iconography with knights having had their personal and/or family crests displayed.
I do think horses had tamgas, especially those coming from the fringes of the empire, where there was more contact with the Sarmatians, Hephtalites etc. So perhaps some of them were decorating their horse felt armour/barding/caparison with their personal crests etc?
saludos
