Nathan: With regards to the ship-based rescue, I'm hoping that there's some connection to Pliny the Elder's ill-fated rescue attempt there. Whilst it's true that a lot of people will have fled the city before the eruption, and that a healthy number of the remainder will have been looters, I think it's also true that many regular citizens will have stayed behind as well. So long as it isn't presented as a sudden shocking event I'll be happy.

I know that Professor Goldsworthy was making a humorous aside, but I do think he is on to something, even though the evidence does not seem to support him.

This is somewhat akin to having ninja make an appearance in The Last Samurai even though by that period in time they had ceased to exist. Ninja are a staple of cheap 'chambara' films just as gladiators seem to be endemic to cheap Roman films.

That said, the potential problems with this new Pompeii film, as noted by Robert and Nathan, go far beyond a few gladiators.
